The Scientific Meetings were created at the initiative of scientists from the Agricultural University of Athens, the Research Centre of the Greek Folklore Academy of Athens and the Ministry of Rural Development and Food in order to promote the relevant work of the scientific community to a wider audience, to present the institutional framework governing local varieties and to bring together all those involved in both the production process, researchers and academics as well as private sector representatives.

Their original feature is the interdisciplinary approach of the subject and the participation of cooperatives and businesses in order to provide a broad perspective on the subject. 

The first meeting took place in 2011 at the Agricultural University of Athens, followed by four others.
